Valleyschwag No More 2

I was reading some of the comments on the Valleyschwag blog, looks like a lot of people weren’t pleased with their packages. Some got some sweet packages chock full of goodies. I obviously wasn’t one of them, but that’s ok. It’s an extra $15 a month in my wallet.

American Family Association Must Be Destroyed

The AFA, or American Family Association, in their own words is…

AFA is for people who are tired of cursing the darkness and who are ready to light a bonfire. We are a non-profit (501(c)(3)) organization founded in 1977 by Don Wildmon. The American Family Association represents and stands for traditional family values, focusing primarily on the influence of television and other media – including pornography – on our society.

AFA believes that the entertainment industry, through its various products, has played a major role in the decline of those values on which our country was founded and which keep a society and its families strong and healthy. For example, over the last 25 years we have seen the entertainment industry “normalize” and glorify premarital sex. During that time we have suffered a dramatic increase in teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS and abortion as a means of birth control.

Now I’m a Christian, a Catholic to be exact so that probably means that they hate me too, but I don’t believe one thing the AFA spouts. They’re for the prudification of America. Yes I know that prudification is not a word, but that’s exactly what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to bring back the Victorian age where any hint of sexuality, whether hetero or homo, should be shunned. Profanity is another target for the AFA and their hound dogs. They’re using their vast network of Right Wing zealots to force their beliefs on everyone whether we like it or not and then they have the balls to whine about everyone else. Their hipocrisy knows no bounds.

One of the AFA’s methods of forcing change is to boycott whomever they feel is propogating moral corruption. Thankfully often times they fail as was the case with their nine year boycott of Disney. The AFA didn’t like the fact that Disney had a “Gay Day” at its theme parks every year so they tried to get Disney to ban “Gay Day” revelers from its theme parks and set up an advisory panel of evangelical Christians. Furthermore they urged members to shun anything Disney, whether it was a trip to one of their theme parks, their movies or anything else Disney. Ultimately their boycott failed miserably with Disney showing an increase in theme park attendance, movie audience increases and profits on the rise.

Another method that the AFA employs is the letter writing campaign to the FCC whenever there’s a tv program that they feel violates their morals. Their most recent call for boycott is what really set me off. The AFA has declared war against CBS for an upcoming 9/11 documentary that they will be showing. CBS will be airing a documentary where actual footage from inside the twin towers on 9/11 is being used. This footage contains some pretty harsh profanity, but you would expect is considering the events of the day. Well the AFA feels that CBS is being immoral because they’re airing the footage. They claim that “The decision by CBS is a slap in the face to the FCC and Congress.”

A slap in the face? How about a slap in the face to the god damn firefighters and police officers that were there that day. How about a slap in the face to the people that died that day. People were scared, they were confused, they were fighting for their lives. Guess what, you’re going to hear swearing in the real world yet they want to sanitize the events of the day because they don’t like profanity. Well too bad. These are the same idiots that sent in thousands of letters to the FCC to complain about an unedited version of Saving Private Ryan that aired on ABC during Veterans Day last year. They complained about the profanity, not the violence. Blowing somebody up, watching them burn, shooting them in the head is ok, but swearing? Hell no, that’s unacceptable. How stupid can they really be?

I haven’t even touched on their stance against homosexuals or anything portraying homosexuality or sex on tv and in the movies, that’s a whole other rant. I’ll save you the time and just say that these people are living in their own little dream world and don’t want to face reality. They don’t want progress, they want to regress and worst of all is that they have the ear of the current administration and other politicians. Their influence is growing in the FCC and in Congress and it must be stopped. Let’s move forward, not backwards like they want.

The AFA MUST BE DESTROYED!

BSG Webisodes

Thank the Gods, the webisodes for Battlestar Galactica will begin airing twice a week starting September 5th.

It’s All Gone Pete Tong

It’s All Gone Pete Tong has nothing to do with Pete Tong. The title refers to an English phrase which is used when things aren’t going as they should. I’ve been listening to Techno, House, Trance, etc. for a while now, but I didn’t know anything about DJ Frankie Wilde before I saw this movie. Now I’m glad I got to see it.

It’s All Gone Pete Tong is a bit of a mockumentary of Frankie Wilde’s life. Paul Kaye portrays Wilde as a coke snorting, whiskey drinking superstar DJ living in Ibiza, Spain. Wild’s stuck in a marriage to a beautiful but vacuous model, a growing drug habit and a well intentioned manager that is nonetheless a manager, and not a friend, to the person who has made him rich. Yet his worst problem manifests while he’s on stage, he’s starting to go deaf. Unfortuntaely Frankie completely looses his hearing and he drops further than ever before.

The film does a great job of showcasing Wilde’s growing frustration and fear dropping us directly into his shoes by silencing and or muffling the soundtrack to the world that Wilde is trapped in. Wilde finally breaks free of his demons and starts to get his life back on track, finding a deaf woman that shows him he can still live if he learns how. Wilde gets his groove back for mixing and living and finds himself happier than he’s ever been.

There are some reasonably funny mockumentary moments where a record exec muses that they had to let Frankie go because, with one notable example, the field of music has been dominated by people who could…uh…hear. If you know the DJ scene you’ll recognize some familiar faces giving interviews about Wilde. As expected the soundtrack to the film is great too.

Deadwood Finale

Wow, what a disappointing finale to Deadwood. Such build up all season long goes out with a whimper. I was SO disappointed.
