Rainbow Six Vegas

Just one in a long line of sequels, Rainbow Six Vegas brings the game back to its roots in a way. Previous Rainbows were little more than a series of well-designed skirmishes loosely hooked together in sequence, this time around Ubisoft set out and actually developed a story arc. The game starts in the deserted streets of Mexico City and essentially acts as a prolonged tutorial. It was an unexpected way to kick things off and a bit of a disappointment as well. It felt like a dumbed down version of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and left a poor impression on me. Once you move on the Las Vegas though things get a bit more interesting, for the better.

The visuals are spectacular in this game and it makes use of the architecture in spectacular fashion. Terrorists burst in through glass ceilings, they attack from balconies several stories above you, they strike from beneath stairwells, they flank you from all sides, and on all elevations. This is a truly three-dimensional experience that takes full advantage of the environment to build some dramatic tension. Shot a slot machine and watch the money flow. The game really make great use of everything in it.

The biggest disappointment for me though is the pacing, something which I found to be particularly slow. It feels as though you’re sneaking around looking for the terrorists far more than actually engaging them. At times I found myself getting bored roaming around the casino, yet it didn’t infuriate me like the difficulty in killing some terrorists did. My biggest peeve with the game was the difficulty of killing some of the terrorists. For some reason five shots to the chest or head wouldn’t drop a terrorist yet they would hit me once and down I went. I found this frustrating when I was at the end of a mission with about two guys to go and they were the most stubborn two guys ever. Down I went and I had to restart all over, which took another fifteen minutes to re-conquer the level.

I wasn’t interested in playing the multi-player version, but from what I’ve gathered if you really like big battles and nothing else you should skip the single-player game and head straight online.

To say I was disappointed would be a massive understatement. I was really looking forward to this game, but ultimately beautiful graphics do not make a great game. Guess I’ll be sticking with Gears of War.

Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society’s U.S. Release

I’m a huge fan of the Ghost in the Shell series, both comics, movies and tv shows, so it’s safe to say that I’ve been looking forward to seeing this movie for a while. The good news is that I won’t have to wait too much longer to see the English dubbed release. The New York Comic Convention, going on from February 23-25 of 2007, will be premiering SSS as one of the major movie screenings during the event. Expect the exact schedule to be announced in the coming months.

The dubbing will be done by the voice actors we’ve come to love from the television episodes and movies. The movie’s been released in Japan on DVD, but from what I’ve read there are no English subtitles.

RIP Dave Cockrum

Dave Cockrum passed away this weekend, he was the creator of Nightcrawler, Colossus and some other classic X-Men characters. Nightcrawler and Colossus have always been my favorite characters. RIP

Superman Returns

Superman Returns is finally out, just in time for the release of the DVD and I don’t think EA could have waited any longer to release the game. It’s not like the game is a next gen masterpiece and it sure could have used the extra time to polish it up, both style wise and game play wise.

For a game that’s supposed to be a movie tie-in it doesn’t have a whole lot in common with the movie. You’ll fight Mongrul, Metallo and Bizarro, all of whom had nothing to do with the movie. Finally you get to fight someone that’s actually in the film, Lex Luthor. You’re free to go almost anywhere, from street level to thousands of feet above even the tallest building. The view from high up in the sky is neat at first, and it’s fun to zoom down through the clouds and wind through city streets and in between the skyscrapers at breakneck speeds, but gets old… fast.

The game is divided into chapters comprised of a series of objectives that only appear by flying around aimlessly until you get close enough to one to trigger it. As is evident by the way the game drags on and on, there are certainly plenty of objectives but there’s just not much variety to them. Early in the game most of your time will be spent fighting robots, all types of boring robots. Later you’ll be fighting evil monsters and even dragons. Yes that’s right, dragons.

One thing I found interesting is that there’s not a health bar for Superman, instead the city of Metropolis has one. So when the bad guys torch trees, throw cars, and beat up civilians it diminishes Metropolis’ health bar, and when it’s empty, it’s game over. It’s a novel idea, but doesn’t really do anything for me, if anything it’s kind of boring because it makes Superman totally invincible.

One of the positive things I found was the ability to pick up random people, fly around with them and drop them off on top of tall buildings. One annoying thing about it though was the inability to just drop them into water or while you were flying or just hovering. C’mon, make it realistic. Another neat little feature I found, and something that has no effect on the game what so ever, is when you’re flying around at top speed. When you break the sound barrier you hear a sonic boom. Other than that there weren’t too many things that really tickled my fancy

Some of the negative things I found were that the cars look very cartoony and un-realistic, as well as the civilians running around all of Metropolis. For having all of the extra time to work on the game I thought that EA dropped the ball on a number of aspects. One would expect EA to finally start making some next gen games, but all this seemed like was a port of the XBox or PS2 version. Overall the game wasn’t terrible, but it was definitely not something I would go out and buy or recommend you buy either. Your best bet is to borrow it from a friend or rent it like I did.
