Atomic Robo is back with an all new five issue mini-series titled Shadow From Beyond Time. Creators Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener have transported us back to the mid 1920′s as Robo takes on deals with his creators past and takes on a very literal Lovecraftian monster. Stepping away from the science fiction aspect of Robo, the story deals more with the supernatural or fantasy genre. While it may not sounds like something that Robo is known for, it’ll make for an interesting story.
Shadows From Beyond Time takes on one of the biggest sources for the fantasy genre, H.P. Lovecraft and Charles Fort. Taking place in 1926, the mini-series strays from the action packed issues we’ve been previously treated to, for now that is. Instead, we’re treated to an interesting take on the Tunguska event and just how Lovecraft came up with the creatures he did. Here Fort and Lovecraft are portrayed as a couple of vaudevillian characters, a bit reminiscent of Abbot and Costello. Instead this time the tall skinny one is the bumbling idiot.
Clevinger clearly has the entire series mapped and thoroughly thought out with what’s probably the most in depth story we’ll have seen yet. The script has its humorous moments it doesn’t overpower or distract from the story. Wegener’s pencils are top notch as usual. For being a robot, Robo exudes a lot of emotion and character and that’s only possible because of Wegener’s talents. The pencils are sharp and well drawn, exactly what you’d expect from this book.
Overall, Shadows From Beyond Time might be the most “dark” Atomic Robo mini-series to date. Robo fans will really enjoy it and new readers can easily get a grasp of who and what Robo is. It’s the perfect jumping on point for new and familiar readers. You won’t be disappointed.
